What is Gingivitis?

Infection on Gums Prevention | 3D Dentistry Dentists TorontoGingivitis is the earliest stage of Periodontal (gum) Disease and is defined as an inflammation of the gums surrounding the teeth.   It is caused by inadequate oral hygiene, which leads to plaque build up. The plaque contains bacteria that cause a gum infection triggering an immune response. This response results in redness and inflammation in these areas. People with gingivitis usually experience little or no discomfort but will often complain of bleeding gums when they brush and/or floss. Gingivitis is reversible with professional periodontal treatment and good home care. However, if left untreated, it can advance to Periodontitis. This more severe stage of periodontal disease results in irreversible damage to gums and supporting bone which, in the most severe cases can result in loss of teeth.

At Cherry Blossom Dentistry we focus on prevention by educating our patients. Brushing and flossing daily is the best way to reduce your risk of developing gingivitis.
